Our story

Turf Hawaii started in 2003 when a former golf course superintendent chased his lifelong dream of starting his own farm. His mission was to “think global and act local.” With the support of his wife, Dean Maruyama transformed a lava field speckled with noni plants into a 10-acre farm that sells high-quality sod and stolons to homeowners, landscapers, resorts and golf courses.

Owner Dean Maruyama has a philosophy of finding eco-friendly solutions in landscaping. He grows turf varieties selected for resilience and uses sustainable inputs, such as compost tea to fertilize and salt for weed control.

Our family

Dean’s pursuit of his family farm has truly become a family opportunity. Now, three generations live on the farm.

The acreage is home to his son’s composting business, Organic Matters Hawaii, and his daughter’s and son-in-law’s moringa wellness company, Maruyama Jones Farm.
